I had the pleasure of being a part of an International Women’s Breakfast where the panelists were discussing work/life balance.
I wonder, should it be life/work balance? Or is there really such a thing?
One of the many things women celebrate about themselves is their ability to juggle their families, work and lifestyles but at the same time they are often heard lamenting over their inability to maintain balance and their subsequent guilt about it. But does balance really exist?
There are three absolutes in life
1. Everything is constantly changing
2. We’ll all die sometime and
If everything changes constantly then balance is physically impossible. By letting go of the need to be balanced women might be well served to search for clarity of purpose and courage of choice instead.
Let me leave you with a thought from a woman that I will certainly be following more closely, Padmasree Warrior, the Chief Technology and Strategy Officer for Cisco Systems and previous CTO of General Electric. She is the 71st most powerful woman in the world as noted by Forbes, and she says
I don’t like the word ‘balance.’ To me, that somehow conjures up conflict between work and family… as long as we think of these things as conflicting, we will never have happiness. True happiness comes from integration… of work, family, self, community.
I love her way of thinking!
